 Oh
the glitz and the glamour!
Think movie stars, think film festivals, think Cannes.
Here the warm sun does not set until about eleven so the days
are warm and bright. The wide promenade is divided in the center
with rows of large Palm trees. On one side is the beach, divided
into smaller sections according to the hotel (The Carnes Carlton
is the pick). Expect to lounge on beach chairs, shaded by
umbrellas and order food and drink from the on-call waiters. Security
guards mind valuables (although no one told them scantily clad
girls bodies do not count as the valuables they are supposed to
have their eyes on.)
The other side of the road is filled with large designer boutiques,
beautiful terrace cafes and hotels, complete with chic holiday
makers, each with child and nanny duo. At the end is the harbor
where massive yachts are moored. I spied Ivana Trump's, but even
her massive ´floating palace´ was dwarfed by some
of the even larger vessels. Of course the famed theatre where
the Cannes film festival is held is a red-carpet photo op! Even
in your dress and heals, climb the magical merry go round complete
with pink fairy lights and horses and carriages and music and
relive your childhood dreams.
Feel like shopping? In the back streets there are more designer
shops as well as hip boutiques, street stalls selling souvenirs,
ice creams and the most delicious pastry shops that smell so good
that people line up to sample the delicacies. Don't forget the
early morning colorful and lively markets that have stalls containing
dazzling flowers, oils and the largest, sweetest, juiciest selection
of fruit.
As night falls the back streets are also lined with hip bars
which start off quietly enough but don't take long to turn wild,
as girls who have had a little too much sun and alcohol combined
begin table top dancing.
Just like the lyrics to the music on the merry-go-round, in Cannes,
it is a wonderful life!
